UA students cheer Nader, but few commit to vote for him

Loud applause rang out at the University of Arizona law school yesterday when independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader compared the Bush administration to its predecessor.

"Don't misunderstand me," he said. "Lying under oath, as Clinton did, is wrong, but if the platform of deception, fabrications and lies that Bush used to lead Americans to war in Iraq is not an impeachable offense, then what is?"

Just off the plane from Phoenix, Nader made his comments to about 300 UA students and faculty outside the James E. Rogers College of Law building during a campaign stop.

Nader's goal: to get approximately 15,000 valid signatures of Arizonans on a petition by June 9 to get his name on the presidential ballot in November.

"We won't be satisfied until we get about 18,000 or 19,000," he said after his speech.

Although they embraced the candidate warmly, many of Nader's supporters, some of whom voted for him in 2000, said they were more interested in getting rid of Bush than committing themselves to an "unrealistic" Nader win.

"He's very inspiring," said Justyn Dillingham, 21, a journalism student who signed the petition. "But I'm not sure if I'll vote for him. I'm really wary about another Bush presidency."

UA law student Rachel Bengtson, 25, signed Nader's petition. She voted for Nader in 2000 but isn't sure if she'll vote for him again. She is more concerned about blocking a continued Bush presidency.

"Bush is the worst thing that's happened in my life. Getting rid of him is more important to me than an unrealistic Nader presidency," she said.

Nesreen Khashan, 31, a Near Eastern studies graduate student and 2000 Nader supporter, said although she is uncertain of giving Nader her 2004 vote, she is "grateful" he is running.

"I think it's wrong for people to want (Nader) out of the race so bad that they discourage him from exercising his right to run," she said.

"I don't know if I support everything he says, but I voted for him four years ago," said Marc Tobin, 21, a political science major who signed the petition. "He seems pretty truthful."
